5 Times When UFC Stars Removed From The Main Roster

1 years ago By Sports Desk

In the world of mixed martial arts, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) stands as the pinnacle of competition. Fighters from across the globe aspire to make their mark in the octagon, but not all can withstand the test of time. Throughout its history, the UFC has seen legendary fighters removed from its main roster for various reasons. This article explores five memorable moments when UFC stars were removed from the main roster, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.

1. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, The End of an Era:

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, was one of the most feared fighters in the sport. His career had its peaks and valleys, but it all came to an emotional end in January 2023. After suffering a technical knockout in the first round against Ihor Potieria, Rua was removed from the roster. It marked the conclusion of a storied career that included winning the PRIDE 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix and capturing the UFC Light Heavyweight title.

2. Glover Teixeira, Too Tough for His Own Good:

Glover Teixeira, another former light heavyweight champion, decided to retire after losing a tough five-round decision to Jamahal Hill. Teixeira recognized that at 43 years old, he might have been “too tough for his own good.” His retirement speech was emotional, and he was already looking to the future, aiming to be avenged by his pupil and middleweight champion, Alex Pereira.

3. Kyle Daukaus: From UFC to Free Agency

Kyle Daukaus, the younger brother of UFC heavyweight Chris Daukaus, faced a different fate. After losing his last two fights via violent knockout, including a loss to Eryk Anders in December 2022, Daukaus was not released by the UFC. Instead, his last fight marked the end of his contract, making him a free agent. Daukaus left the UFC with an 11-4-1 record, showing that the road to success in MMA is always under construction.

4. The Korean Zombie: A Memorable Farewell

Chan Sung Jung, known as “The Korean Zombie,” had a memorable career filled with thrilling fights. However, his UFC journey came to an end after a defeat to Max Holloway, marking his third loss in his last four contests. Jung’s retirement was bittersweet, as fans cherished the exciting moments he brought to the octagon.

5. Derek Brunson, The End of a Streak:

Derek Brunson’s removal from the UFC main roster came after a two-fight losing streak. He suffered a second-round TKO loss to Dricus Du Plessis, which followed a KO loss to Jared Cannonier, ending his five-fight win streak. Brunson’s departure was notable, as he had notable wins over fighters like Lyoto Machida and Uriah Hall during his UFC career.

The UFC has seen its fair share of legends and rising stars, but the nature of the sport means that not all journeys end on a high note. Fighters like Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Glover Teixeira, Kyle Daukaus, The Korean Zombie, and Derek Brunson all experienced moments when they were removed from the main roster, whether through retirement or other circumstances. Their stories serve as a reminder of the ups and downs that come with competing at the highest level of mixed martial arts.
