Gervonta Davis Expresses Frustration: “Mad” Over Discussions Of Saudi Arabia Boxing Match

1 years ago By Jhon Woug

The excitement among boxing enthusiasts is tangible as they eagerly await Gervonta Davis’s comeback to the sport following his knockout of Ryan Garcia in April. This impressive achievement propelled him into fame, with none other than Mike Tyson referring to him as the “face of boxing.” However, talks about a potential match held in Saudi Arabia have left ‘Tank’ Davis feeling noticeably uneasy.

Recognising his prestigious position in the world of boxing, Davis, reigning WBA (Super) lightweight champion, anticipates a compelling offer to entice him away from domestic territory. The emergence of Saudi Arabia’s significant influence within the sport makes for an intricate decision-making process for this accomplished athlete.

Alalshikh, a prominent figure in bringing boxing to Saudi Arabia, has shown interest in attracting Davis to the Middle East. This fits with Alalshikh’s strategy of establishing his country as a top location for high-profile boxing events after successful matches such as Joshua vs. Ngannou. However, Tank Davis has been firm that he requires more than just monetary incentives.

Davis expressed his discontent in a post that has since been deleted, in which he made it clear that receiving just a substantial salary doesn’t suffice. He boldly stated, “They really pissed me off; if they want to impress me, they better send over two Ferraris or something equally extravagant! Otherwise, I won’t even consider going there.” His request for tangible gifts indicates his desire to see real efforts from the interested party and not merely financial compensation.

Davis dismissed rumours of potential fear about fighting in Saudi Arabia and confidently asserted his power within the sport, suggesting that financial motives will not be the only factor in any decision to fight overseas. He smirked as he responded to a fan’s question on this topic.

Davis’s trainer, Calvin Ford, has added a new dimension to the story by expressing doubts about Davis competing against Shakur Stevenson. Although Stevenson is also a champion in the lightweight category and won over Edwin De Los Santos in November, he faced criticism for what some have called one of boxing history’s worst title fights.

During an interview with Marko Boxing, Ford firmly rejected the idea of Davis going against Stevenson. Ford justified his position by criticising Stevenson’s unimpressive display in a match that he dubbed “abysmal.” He emphasised how imperative it is to uphold high entertainment standards for viewers and fans alike. This approach taken by Ford highlights his dedication to guaranteeing Davis participates in bouts not only capable of winning but also captivating spectators with excitement and enjoyment.

Davis’s approach to decision-making, whether it involves selecting opponents or considering international matchups, exposes a fighter who prioritises more than mere financial rewards. By insisting on perks and rejecting the Stevenson fight based on performance considerations, Davis exhibits an astute sense of his own value and dedication towards ensuring high-calibre fights.

As spring approaches, fans are anxiously anticipating Davis’s comeback to the ring. In gaining insight into the behind-the-scenes negotiations and considerations surrounding his return, we gain a fascinating glimpse into modern boxing star mentality. Boasting an intricate mixture of athleticism, strategy, and business acumen all in one dynamic landscape, boxing continues to evolve through time, with Gervonta Davis at its forefront as a compelling figure that demands attention from us all.
