Promoter Lou DiBella Furious: WBC Declares Alycia Baumgardner ‘Not Guilty’ Despite Positive Mesterolone Test

12 months ago By Jhon Woug

Controversies are common in the gritty world of boxing, and currently one is brewing around Alycia Baumgardner, the undisputed featherweight champion. Recently, the WBC declared her ‘not guilty’ despite testing positive for mesterolone, causing a stir on January 15, 2024, within the boxing community. Promoter Lou DiBella expressed his strong disagreement with this decision.

The story commenced with Baumgardner’s match against Christina Linardatou on July 15, 2023. She emerged victorious through a unanimous decision and was jubilant. Regrettably, the elation did not last long, as news broke in mid-August that her sample from July 12 had tested positive for mesterolone, a prohibited substance. Skipping to January 15, WBC initiated an inquiry leading to Baumgardner being cleared of all charges, which disappointed Lou DiBella greatly.

DiBella’s message on social media was clear and direct. He expressed his disbelief at the “INTENTIONAL INGESTION” verdict, using profanity to emphasise his frustration with boxing as a whole. DiBella went on to criticise the current regulations regarding performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), stating that they are inconsistent, poorly enforced, irrational, and unclean. His comments make it evident that he doesn’t believe there is any real adherence to PED regulation in boxing today, not just related specifically to testing but also involving other aspects of keeping the sport clean overall. Doughnuts would contribute to its impurity overages.

DiBella’s criticism prompts relevant inquiries concerning boxing’s regulatory structure, prompting reflection on the reliability and effectiveness of its anti-doping efforts. His vocal expression resonates with those who advocate for an improved system throughout the sport to guarantee equitable competition.

During a podcast with Shaquille O’Neal, which aired on January 11, 2024, Alycia Baumgardner conveyed her perspective. Explaining the circumstances as mentally taxing and financially straining, she affirmed that she was not at fault. She has continuously expressed her innocence to regulatory agencies, supporters, and the press in no uncertain terms. With unwavering confidence, she announced, “I have never engaged in cheating or doping throughout my career. My presence here is proof of that fact! Soon I’ll emerge again to fight for my titles.”

Although the WBC’s ruling may have brought Baumgardner some comfort, the boxing community remains split on the issue. The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission and other sanctioning bodies have yet to disclose their position, adding an extra layer of complexity to this already complex story regarding the featherweight champ’s alleged involvement in a doping scandal.

The sequence of occurrences in this affair further complicates the developing saga. Following the first findings on August 16, 2023, Baumgardner made a statement to the public, underscoring that her sample provided immediately after her bout tested negative for all prohibited substances. This prompts inquiries into test result reliability and introduces an additional level of intricacy to an already tangled situation.

The decision made by the WBC has sparked varied viewpoints within the boxing community. On one hand, there are those who believe that Baumgardner’s exoneration is proof of his innocence. However, on the other side of the spectrum lie Lou DiBella and others who perceive this ruling as a sign of bigger problems plaguing the sport. Their main concern revolves around inconsistency in implementing anti-doping measures, an issue brought to light through DiBella’s passionate outburst against it lacking transparency and uniformity across board policies.

The recent revelations in the boxing world have sparked a larger discussion regarding the sport’s credibility and integrity. These debates may spark reform of current anti-doping measures, calling for greater transparency and consistency when dealing with high-stakes cases that involve undisputed champions. A more structured approach is necessary to maintain trust among stakeholders invested in maintaining a fair playing field.

The decision made by the WBC has left fans, fighters, and promoters such as Lou DiBella in a state of anticipation. They are now waiting to see how other sanctioning bodies will react—will they absolve Baumgardner of any intentional wrongdoing or add another layer of intricacy to an already complicated situation?

The world of boxing is currently facing a critical juncture as it contends with the repercussions arising from the WBC’s contentious ruling in Baumgardner’s case. The stakeholders invested in this sport must confront fundamental issues concerning drug regulations and consistent measures for testing athletes while addressing broader questions regarding professional boxing’s integrity. As events continue to unfold, it becomes evident that the matter at hand isn’t limited to one fighter alone but represents an overarching indicator of uncertainty and difficulty within this realm of sportsmanship.
