Sean O’Malley claps back at Ryan Garcia after revealing boxing aspirations

1 years ago By Sports Desk

It seems Sean O’Malley wants to try his hand at boxing. ‘Suga’ recently secured a second-round knockout victory over Aljamain Sterling to become the new UFC bantamweight champion. Now on a six-fight unbeaten streak, the 28-year-old Montana native has big plans for his career.

At the UFC 292 post-fight press conference, O’Malley expressed his desire to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in the boxing ring. Speaking to reporters, Sean O’Malley promised that fans will see him knocking out ‘Tank’ in the squared circle someday.

While O’Malley is widely known as one of the best strikers in the UFC, former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia doesn’t think he can stand up against a professional boxer. Warning ‘Suga’ about getting knocked out in the boxing ring, he tweeted:

“SUGA Sean. You are good and all. But stop talking about this, “I’m going to box stuff.” You’ll just get knocked out.”

Not one to take insults sitting back, Sean O’Malley fired back. Referencing Garcia’s last seventh-round knockout loss against Davis, he wrote:

“Like you did or different?”

Given O’Malley’s contract situation with the UFC, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see ‘Suga’ in the boxing ring anytime soon. Moreover, Sean O’Malley is angling for a rematch against longtime rival Marlon Vera for his first title defense. In a post-fight octagon interview, he called for a fight against ‘Chito’ at UFC 296 in December.

Aljamain Sterling hopes to get an immediate rematch against Sean O’Malley

Aljamain Sterling recently weighed in on his recent title loss to Sean O’Malley and expressed hope that he’ll be awarded an immediate rematch.

After a close first round that was scored in his favor, Sterling was spectacularly knocked out by O’Malley in the second round. O’Malley’s right hand ended Sterling’s nine-fight winning streak and his title run, which dated back to March 2021.

Despite his loss, the ‘Funk Master’ is widely considered the greatest UFC bantamweight champion ever. Aljamain Sterling has the longest win streak, most wins, and most consecutive title defenses in UFC bantamweight history. Given his impressive resume, Sterling feels like he deserves an immediate rematch with O’Malley.

At the UFC 292 post-fight presser, Aljamain Sterling opened up about his loss to Sean O’Malley and said:

“It definitely sucks… I’m not going to lie about that. There was a lot coming into this fight. The quick turnaround and everything, but I was happy to do it. No excuses…I would love to have a rematch…I would first and foremost love a chance to run that back and just to get some definitive answers.”
