The Great British Smackdown: Will WrestleMania Go International In 2026?

2 days ago By Jhon Woug

As WWE’s premier event, WrestleMania has become an international phenomenon, with fans from all over the globe tuning in. The show has mostly been staged in North America, though, with only two events outside of the United States – both in Canada. As we approach 2026, rumors are growing about the potential for WrestleMania to finally make the jump across the Atlantic and arrive in the United Kingdom. Let’s examine the possibility of an international WrestleMania, the obstacles it would encounter, and the effect it could have on the world of wrestling.

The Road to an International WrestleMania

WWE has been steadily expanding its international presence over the past decade. The company has held major events in Saudi Arabia, Australia, and various European countries. In the UK specifically, WWE has seen tremendous success with events like Clash at the Castle in Cardiff and Money in the Bank in London. These shows have demonstrated the passionate fanbase and market potential in the region.

The idea of bringing WrestleMania to the UK isn’t new. WWE superstar John Cena publicly campaigned for a London WrestleMania during a surprise appearance at Money in the Bank in 2023. His impassioned speech to the London crowd highlighted the long-standing support of UK fans and their deserving nature of hosting WWE’s premier event.

The London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also backed the concept. In July 2024, Khan welcomed WWE executives, such as Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque and WWE President Nick Khan, to consider hosting WrestleMania in the capital7. The senior-level meeting indicates that serious consideration is being given to an international WrestleMania.

Logistical Issues

Although the buzz for an international WrestleMania is real, the event would be severely logistically challenged. WWE Hall of Famer and former executive Eric Bischoff has detailed some of these challenges:

Time Zones: Perhaps the largest obstacle is televising the event at an hour convenient to the target U.S. fan base. The London-based WrestleMania would be televised in the local early evening for it to arrive in prime time across the United States, which would impact attendance as well as buzz.

Production Costs: Hosting WrestleMania overseas would significantly increase production expenses. Everything from travel to equipment shipping would be more costly.

Vendor Relationships: WWE has forged vendor relationships with U.S.-based vendors for many production aspects. Utilizing new, offshore vendors may pose issues and enhance the likelihood of complications.

Team Fatigue: The production staff of WWE is already fatigued during WrestleMania week. Mixing international travel and jet lag into the equation might further exhaust the staff.

Stadium Infrastructure: While the UK boasts top-shelf venues such as Wembley Stadium, making them WWE-specific production-friendly may take some extra effort and investment.

These challenges are not insurmountable, but they would require careful planning and potentially a rethinking of the WrestleMania format. WWE has experience running major events internationally, such as their shows in Saudi Arabia, which could inform their approach to an overseas WrestleMania.

Fan Enthusiasm and Cultural Influence

In spite of the logistical challenges, the possibility of an international WrestleMania has created tremendous buzz among the fans, especially in the UK. The ardent British wrestling fan community has long been demanding a big WWE event, and WrestleMania would be the ultimate realization of that dream.

An international WrestleMania would be a major cultural effect, both on WWE and the host nation. For WWE, it would be a huge step in becoming a worldwide entertainment company. For the UK, having WrestleMania would be a huge coup, possibly competing with other top sports events in terms of economic significance and global coverage.

The cultural exchange would also impact WWE’s product. British wrestling has a rich history and distinct style that could be highlighted on the biggest stage. It could also bring more opportunities for UK-based talent within WWE, adding further diversity to the company’s roster.

Economic Impact and Tourism

WrestleMania is now bigger than a one-night event; it’s an entire week’s celebration consisting of several shows, fan events, and community initiatives. This “WrestleMania Week” creates a significant economic footprint in host cities. WWE cites that recent WrestleManias have generated over $1.25 billion in combined economic impact for host cities8.

For London, a city that already hosts a strong tourist industry, WrestleMania would be a welcome stimulus. The number of foreign fans from around the world would be an economic boon to the hotels, eateries, and local attractions. The international exposure via the media would also be a welcome promotion for the city.

Possible Locations and Schedule

If WWE were to stage WrestleMania in the UK, the strongest contender for the site would be Wembley Stadium in London. At 90,000, Wembley has the capacity to host the largest WrestleMania attendance in history. The stadium’s rich history in sports and entertainment would lend dignity to the event.

Regarding timing, WrestleMania 42 in 2026 has been the subject of speculation. Nevertheless, recent reports indicate that New Orleans could be the favorite to host the event for that year. If so, this would set back a possible UK WrestleMania further than ever, perhaps to 2027 or later.

The Two-Night Format and Global Opportunities

Since WrestleMania 36 in 2020, WWE has utilized a two-night format for the event. The switch has been overall positively received by fans, who felt that the old single-night, seven-hour events were exhausting. The two-night format might even make an international WrestleMania more viable.

One interesting option that has been suggested is having the two nights in separate cities or even nations. As an example, WWE might produce Night 1 in London and Night 2 in New York. Although this would also have its own array of logistical issues, it might be a novel means of overcoming the distinction between WWE’s American heritage and global aspirations.

The Netflix Effect

A fascinating twist in the debate about an international WrestleMania is WWE’s new agreement with Netflix. Beginning in January 2025, all WWE programming outside of the U.S. will be streamed on Netflix. This worldwide distribution agreement may make it simpler for WWE to rationalize an international WrestleMania, as they would have a stable platform for distributing the event globally.

Competing Visions

While some fans and WWE personalities look forward to seeing an international WrestleMania, all company members see eye to eye on this plan. WWE President Nick Khan announced in January 2025 that big WWE shows, such as WrestleMania, will take place in the United States or Canada in the near future. This revelation appears to oppose the current proposals for a London WrestleMania.

WWE might be considering the advantages and disadvantages of an overseas WrestleMania and not having decided yet. WWE might also be employing the potential as leverage when negotiating with possible U.S. host cities.

The Fan Perspective

Fan response to the prospect of an international WrestleMania has been divided. Most UK fans are naturally looking forward to the prospect of hosting WWE’s flagship event. That said, a few U.S.-based fans have objected to the time difference and the prospect of finding it difficult to make it to the show.

There is also controversy surrounding whether dispersing WrestleMania over two nights loses its impact as a one-time, monolithic event. Some enthusiasts enjoy the epic, one-night-only experience of WrestleMania, while others welcome the more palatable two-night setup.

Conclusion: A Matter of When, Not If?

Though there are daunting obstacles to holding WrestleMania overseas, the potential payoff for WWE, the fans, and the host city is tremendous. The firm’s ongoing expansion overseas, combined with the impassioned entreaties from the fans and municipal authorities, makes it a question of “when” rather than “if” that WWE stages an overseas WrestleMania.

The success of other WWE events in foreign lands, especially the UK, has already demonstrated that there is a market for high-level wrestling beyond North America. London’s WrestleMania, or any foreign city, would be the ultimate validation of WWE’s universal popularity.

However, given the logistical complexities and the recent statements from WWE executives, it seems unlikely that we’ll see an international WrestleMania as soon as 2026. A more realistic target might be 2027 or 2028, giving WWE ample time to plan and prepare for such a monumental undertaking.

Whenever it does occur, an international WrestleMania would be a defining moment for professional wrestling. It would effectively solidify WWE’s position as a worldwide entertainment giant and create a memory that fans everywhere would never forget. As the company continues to grow and develop, the vision of WrestleMania in London, or some other foreign city, is still very much alive.
